pointe de Penchâteau, 44510 Le Pouliguen
Anyone looking for the ultimate nature experience on the Guérande peninsula has to head to the coast. Right where the Le Croisic peninsula juts far out into the Atlantic Ocean, a world-class landscape spectacle begins: the Côte Sauvage (the Wild Coast). Stretching across roughly 14 kilometers between Le Croisic and Le Pouliguen, nature shows itself from its rawest and most fascinating side. Here, the elements rule—wind, sea spray, and rugged granite cliffs that have defied the relentless forces of the ocean for millennia.
A Natural Cinema of Bizarre Rocks and Hidden Coves
A stroll along the Côte Sauvage is like visiting a natural open-air cinema. The coastline is shaped by deeply jagged granite cliffs, carved over time by the crashing surf into often bizarre shapes. Many of these rocks bear mystical names today, such as the „Bear,“ the „Lion,“ or the „Titan,“ because with a little imagination, their silhouettes closely resemble mythical creatures.
Tucked away between the steep cliffs are numerous small, sandy coves—known locally as criques. While they are almost completely swallowed by the churning sea at high tide, they invite you to take a brief rest during low tide. However, swimming should be strictly avoided along this stretch of coast due to treacherous currents and razor-sharp underwater rocks—it is best to enjoy the panorama with firm, safe ground beneath your feet.
Getting Close to the Sea on the Sentier des Douaniers
The best way to experience the Côte Sauvage firsthand is by walking the famous Customs Officers‘ Path (Sentier des Douaniers), also known as the long-distance hiking trail GR34. This narrow path winds directly along the edge of the cliffs, offering breathtaking new views of the deep blue or emerald green sea around every single bend.
The hike is particularly spectacular on windy days or during high tide. When the mighty Atlantic waves crash with full force against the rock faces and the white spray is thrown meters high into the air, you can truly feel the unbridled energy of this place. The taste of salt on your lips and the constant cry of seabirds nesting in the cliffs make the maritime experience complete.
My Tip: The Côte Sauvage is the absolute hotspot on the peninsula for watching the sunset. Since the coast faces west, the sun sinks directly into the open ocean in the evening. Find a safe spot on the rocks well in time, bring a blanket and a small picnic, and watch the sky and the Atlantic light up in the wildest shades of orange and red. Do not forget your camera—this lighting atmosphere is pure magic!
